Sen. Young Statement on Tax Breaks for Oil and Gas Companies Passing the Senate
Calls move by Republican majority "baffling"
LANSING — Senator Coleman A. Young II (D-Detroit) issued the following statement after the passage of the HB 4885 Wednesday, giving tax breaks to oil and gas exploration companies in Michigan.
The other bills in the package passed Tuesday.
“It’s baffling to me that while we struggle to fund the most basic services in this state – fixing Michigan’s crumbling, pothole-ridden roads, funding education and investing in our cities – the Republican Majority insists on giving away our precious tax dollars to wealthy oil and gas exploration companies.
“We know they don’t need it. And we know, based on the recent Marathon Oil debacle in Detroit that once these companies get our money they don’t deliver on their promises.
“It’s a sad day indeed when foreign oil and gas companies have better representation in the state Senate than Michigan’s citizens.”
